Jaded Dragon Studios

Jaded Dragon Studios is a small art house producing a wide variety of artwork including illustration, sculpture and graphic novels. We are aiming to publish our work within the next year and a half whether by our own means or through an outside publisher. Any success we attain we plan to use towards helping other fellow artists we know that also should be seen. Currently JDS houses these artists:

Paul Schultz

You may know him better as Pablo, yet his parents named him Paul. Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario; Paul moved to Burlington when he was eighteen where he has resided since. All throughout secondary school he took art courses and even sold the odd piece here and there. Paul drew illustrations for the Yearbook during his sophomore and senior years and received the Guy Dickie Award for achievement in art. After a lengthy pause Paul returned to school and attended Sheridan Institute, taking Art Fundamentals followed by Illustration graduating in 2001. Paul has done illustrations for the Hamilton Board of Education and several newspapers. He has also been commissioned for a wide variety of projects including mascot creation, graphic design and anatomical drawings. Presently he is pursuing publication in the world of graphic storytelling and has dreams of being responsible for one twisted cartoon or another. Paul’s influences include Berni Wrightson, Chris burns and Brian Bolland. His choice of reading material is always changing from day to day but he really gets a kick out of the darker stuff.

Lara Aiken

Born in South Carolina, in February of 1974 and after a two and a half year hiatus on the beaches of Puerto Rico, Lara was finally brought to Canada. Living in several different locations including The Beaches in Toronto and Guildwood her family ultimately took up residence in Burlington when Lara was nine. Lara has always been a passionate artisan and has tried her hand at dozens of mediums throughout her career. These include silversmithing, jewelry-making, screenprinting, stained glass, printmaking and woodworking. However Lara tends to return to painting and papier-maché to fully express herself. All throughout secondary school she took advanced art courses and sold paintings and jewelry. She received her OSSD in 1992. In 1999 she attended Sheridan Institute for Crafts and Design. there she fell in love with clay and has since added the medium to her array of talents. She has been a member of the Sculptors Guild at the Burlington Art Center and has taken classes there in clay and photography. Lara has been commissioned numerous times for paintings and sculptures. She is also a fiendish writer and the author of seven as of yet unpublished graphic novels. Lara cites her favourite artists as Salvador Dali, Renoir, Edward Gory, and H. R. Gieger. Her literary tastes run from the Dark Tower series by Stephen King (best books ever!) to kids books like The Gruffalo and Sticky Burr.

Sheridan Co-op Students

At the same time we started exhibiting at Fan Expo we started a co-op placement within our studio. The students have worked with us on several of our projects and gain experience promoting themselves and their artwork at the show. We hope that they leave with a better idea of what is like to pursue jobs and create your own business in the relentlessly competitive world of freelance artistry. Check these artists out; you won’t be disappointed!

Melanie Luther

Melanie is in her fourth and final year of the Sheridan College BAA Illustration program. She will be spending her year making art and taking her dogs out for walks. During her co-op placement with us she created primary colours for our illustrated poem, Antiquity (and I hope to convince her to finish). She also sold her work with us at Fan Expo 2011.

You can see more of her artwork and info on her Blog.

Dayna Duxbury

Dayna is currently an illustration student at Sheridan college in Oakville, in her fourth and final year. She prefers traditional media, her favourite mediums being watercolour and guache, as well as just being messy with lots of materials. She enjoys reading, walking, working with plants, and she advises against eating brightly coloured mushrooms. During her stay with us she helped with preliminary colours for an upcoming project, Teddy and promoted her work with us at Fan Expo 2011.

You can see more of her artwork and info on her blog.

Suzanne Butt

Now a Sheridan graduate, Suzanne intends to take whatever kind of work life throws her way, but would love to get into the concept art industry. She did primary colouring for the first issue of Space Monkeys and exhibited and sold her artwork alongside us at Fan Expo 2010 and 2011. We hope she will join us again next year!

You can see more of her artwork and info at her online gallery.

Heather Brindley

A graduate of Sheridan Institute, she is a freelance illustrator with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Illustration. She held a co-op placement with us during the summer of 2009 and has done colouring for our works Beware of Frog and The Last Son. Here are some samples of her personal work.
